Familyarize first started taking shape in November of 2021 when we began workshopping the idea of creating an interactive photo album for families. It was obvious to us that there was a need for families to properly document and archive their photos. Almost everyone has photos and photo albums, but when people pass away they leave behind imagery that meant something to them, but as soon as you lose the person maintaining the context of the image - that image loses its worth.
Both of us, having lost grandparents, understood that time is of the essence when preserving history. More often than not, we as humans are blinded by the illusion of immortality which keeps us from thinking about documenting our family history and acting on it. In retrospect it’s too easy to put off organizing and documenting photos that are easily accessible at our fingertips for another day. Until it’s too late.
Through our research we also found that people feel their story is not important to document. They often ask themselves, why would anyone want to know about my story? In creating Familyarize, we aim to empower individuals and encourage them to share their stories and experiences as we believe everyone has a story worth preserving and those stories are incredibly valuable for future generations.
